Atticus Report EP 004: A Case of Canada (Part 2)

In this episode of The Atticus Report, Rick Busby and Stephen Doster conclude their story travels through Canadian music history with Nova Scotia songwriter Lisa Birt in search of music that’s good for something.

In Part 2 of this series, they discuss the music of Arcade Fire, The Guess Who, Rush, Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, k.d. lang and Leonard Cohen, among many  others, while concluding their visit with Nova Scotia songwriter Lisa Birt exploring the history of Canadian music and the regional music scene around the Halifax and Prince Edward Island areas. Along the way, Canada’s underground comedy heroes, the Trailer Park Boys, unexpectedly pop up in the conversation while discussing the music of Rush, and a rare Motown single from unlikely musical bedfellows, Neil Young and Rick James, exposes it Canadian origins. Rick and Stephen also induct Bruce Cockburn’s Stealing Fire as Canada’s first entry into the “Music That’s Good For Something Hall of Fame.”

Each episode of The Atticus Report story travels the world in search of music that’s good for something. In telling stories of musicians and songwriters, both known and unknown, and their musical experiences, The Atticus Report strives to highlight music that inspires positive engagement and interaction in the world from wherever on the planet it originated, whether in the past or happening right now.

For everyone at The Atticus Report, “music that’s good for something” is music that connects with the listener and inspires positive and creative action in their lives and in the world. It is music that entertains, yet also inspires minds to be open to change, to strive for some greater expression from their own soul and to do what is their’s to do to leave the world in a better place for their having been in it.

It’s a lofty standard to maintain and we will do our best to keep the conversation entertaining, educational and, most of all, elevated. We would love for you to come along with us on our journey and invite you to subscribe to The Atticus Report podcast at iTunes.
